Davido’s lover petitions NAPTIP over daughter

Popular artiste, David Adeleke, aka Davido, and his lover, Sophia Momodu, are at daggers drawn over the custody of their seven-month-old daughter, Imade.
Sophia, whose lawyer had filed a petition against the Adeleke family for alleged abduction of the child, said the 23-year-old planned to travel to the United States with Imade without her consent.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Imade would have been taken abroad on Tuesday, but for the insistence of workers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on getting the approval of her mother.
It was learnt that the airport staff had been hinted on the plan to travel with the child and served the petition.
The petition, which was addressed to th2e Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Offences by Gbolaga Ajayi of S. O. AJAYI & CO., said the baby was taken away from the mother in July, 2015.
Sophia claimed that she was tricked into the Adeleke’s family house on the Lagos Island where her baby was taken from her.
The petition read in part, “Our client, a 27-year-old, is the biological mother of a baby girl with name, Aurora Imade Adeleke, who was born on the 14th day of May 2015. The baby’s father is Mr. David Adedeji Adeleke (aka Davido). The father and mother are unmarried.
“On the 11th July, 2015, our client was tricked into visiting the house of Mr. David Adeleke’s half sister – Miss Ashley Coco Adeleke ─ with her baby, Imade Aurora Adeleke. After getting to the house on Baderinwa Alabi Street, Lekki Phase I, Lagos, our client’s baby was forcefully taken from her and she was thrown out of the premises with the threat that she would be decisively dealt with if she ever bothered to return there. There were armed policemen on the premises and our client’s survival instinct made her leave her breast-suckling baby behind, with so much pain in her heart.
“By daybreak on the next day, our client was again at Ashley Adeleke’s house to take her baby, but she was prevented by armed policemen from gaining access into the house. She was again threatened and warned never to return for the child.”
The petition alleged that the Adelekes spread false information to tarnish Sophia’s image and frustrate attempts at getting the baby back.
It said on the day the child was to be flown out of the country, a member of the Adeleke family had claimed to be the child’s mother.
“When Mrs. Modupe Mofikoya, the immigration officer who attended to the Adeleke travelling party accosted Ashley Adeleke and asked for the mother of the baby, she claimed that she was the mother. Immediately, the immigration officer on duty collected her Nigerian passport, she quickly absconded from the scene with the baby. Her father, Mr. Deji Adeleke, showed up shortly afterwards to clear his daughter’s mess.
“Our client, with the help of her family members, including Mr. Dele Momodu, determinedly resisted the attempt by Miss Ashley Adeleke and her father from taking away Imade Adeleke from Lagos. Our client believes that the pair are trying to take the child to America and thus put her out of the reach of the biological mother.
“At the moment, Miss Ashley Adeleke and our client’s daughter, Imade, are still in Lagos and their respective passports are in the custody of the airport immigration services. Our client’s fear now, is that Ashley Adeleke may use another passport and Imade’s American passport to travel through other Nigerian or West African airports,” it said.
The lawyer said Davido’s actions contravened the Lagos State Child Rights Law, urging NAPTIP to thoroughly investigate the matter and give the child’s mother justice.
In a series of posts on Twitter, Sophia said she regretted having an affair with Davido.
She alleged that he abused and threatened her severally over the child.
However, the artiste in a statement obtained by our correspondent, said he acted in the interest of his child.
Davido said Sophia exploited his naivety and trapped him in the relationship.
He said, “I met Sophia when I was barely 21 years old. She was many years older than me and was able to manipulate and exploit my youth, naivety and generosity. Sophia is the mother of my daughter, and no more! She never would be my wife as she was never qualified for that status. Her background is very dissimilar from mine, and she has very paltry education and equally diminished physical attributes.
“Cunningly, she moved into my house because she claimed she had no place to stay in Lagos and that her father was late, while her mother was resident in Abuja.
“I have accepted what providence brought my way, including my own personal indiscretions. But I also have been burdened by the grave lapses in the character of Sophia and have thus suffered for my daughter who I love as much as my late mother, Imade.
“As for the person of Sophia, I paid a two-year rent for her apartment at Lekki and she receives a monthly allowance of N300,000 naira from me ever since Imade was born. This December, Sophia received N500,000 naira as her allowance and Christmas bonus.”
He said he decided to take away his daughter after she was diagnosed to have been infested with cannabis.
David claimed the baby was infested from her mother’s breasts, adding that the problem had done a lot of damage to her system.
He said he was taking her for treatments in Dubai when he was challenged by the airport workers.
“Already, Imade has special needs and has been treated at the American Hospital, Dubai, with all medical costs and travel expenses drawn off my personal purse ever since she was born.
“On December 29, Imade was supposed to travel, once more, to Dubai for further medical care. A family vacation was attached to this medical trip. But our family plan was truncated by Sophia, her uncle, Dele Momodu, in company with his wife. All these persons were the significant accessory to the Lagos airport debacle.”
He said he decided not to take Sophia along on the trip since they had separated.
The 23-year-old said he regretted dating Sophia whom he claimed never made any contribution to the child.
Davido said the airport workers did not have the right to stop him from travelling with his child.
“I am 23 years old now. Sophia appropriated me at 21. I have just unbridled my life from her diabolical and shameless stranglehold. She should find her own life and leave me alone,” he added.
The Zonal Coordinator, NAPTIP, Lagos State, Joseph Famakin, who confirmed the receipt of the petition, said the agency was working on it.
He said, “We have received the petition and we are working on it.”

ECOWAS FG cautions member states not to dump their deportees in Nigeria

The Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau, gave the warning on Thursday in Calabar during the evacuation of 617 people including women and children deported from Gabon to Calabar.

The Federal Government has cautioned Gabon and other ECOWAS member states not to dump deportees from their countries in Nigeria.
The Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau, gave the warning on Thursday in Calabar during the evacuation of 617 people including women and children deported from Gabon to Calabar.
He warned that the federal government would impound any vessel used in dumping deportees in Nigerian seaports.

Dambazzau, who was represented by Mrs Funke Adeuyi, the Comptroller of Immigration, Cross River Command, said that the affected people were dumped at Calabar port since Dec. 26, 2015.
He said that other punitive measures including seizure of vessels and payment of fines as stipulated in the ECOWAS charter would be employed to stop the anomaly.
"Nigeria will no more tolerate this because of security implications of such actions.
"I am here on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Lt.- Gen Abdulrahman Danbazzau, through the Comptroller General of Immigration‎.
"This should be the last time this category of the deportees will be allowed to transit through the Nigerian land borders or ports.
"Any country that brings this category of deportees to Nigeria will face the relevant penalty ranging from impounding of their vessels.
"Nigeria has a new policy on this type of issue and I am here to reiterate that severe action will be taken by Nigerian government should this continue.
"Most of these people were deported for immigration‎ related offense,’’ he said.
Responding on behalf of ambassadors of countries whose nationals were among the deportees, Babacar Mbodi, the Consul General, Republic of Senegal, commended the Nigerian government for safe-keeping of the deportees.
He said that arrangements had been concluded to take the deportees to their respective countries through Seme, a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic.
He assured that Senegal would comply with the new federal government’s policy.
The deportees are from Gabon, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Niger, Mali, Chad and Guinea.

Oki said promotion comes with added responsibilities and that the command was poised to combat crime in 2016.
“We expect you to work harder as we are faced with a mono crime situation in Bayelsa, which is kidnapping, and when you are in a state with only one crime, you have to tackle it,” the commissioner said.
He further urged officers and men of the command to work harder and achieve a crime-free Bayelsa in 2016.
Speaking on behalf of the newly-promoted officers, Mr Asinim Butswat, who is the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, said the promotion would encourage them to work harder for enhanced productivity.
“We are in high spirits and with the promotion coming at this festive period, it is a very valuable gift to us in this season, and we pledge to do our best in serving our fatherland,” Butswat said

Please release my husband- Dasuki's wife begs FG

Wife of embattled former National Security Adviser, Mrs Sambo Dasuki has called on the Federal government to release her husband who according to her "served his nation".

“Nigerians should help me beg the Federal Government, the DSS and other agencies to release my husband who did his best to serve this nation. He is ill, he needs medical attention, he is not pretending. I implore the DSS not to allow him to die in custody. I saw my husband and I felt dejected. He is not just well. Nigerians should assist him to get a reprieve. We(myself, the children and relations) are all destabilised. We don’t know what is happening because three courts have granted him bail. The 11-year-old had a three metre long chain clamped to his right ankle when he was found by police in his bedroom.

After an anonymous complaint, police and social workers stormed the home and found the poorly boy in a bad state.

Beauty queen who faked cancer pleads not guilty to scam

A beauty queen who shaved her head to con friends and family into believing she was battling cancer has denied pocketing thousands from the scam.
Ex-Miss Pennsylvania International US, Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, pretended she had chronic lymphocytic leukemia in March 2013.

The 23-year-old is accused of pocketing cash from fundraisers organised by her loved ones to pay for her fake treatment, the last of which raised $14,000 (£8,948).
Following her arrest, Weaver-Gates was charged with felony counts of theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
She has been held on $150,000 bail at the Centre County Corrections Facility since her arrest.

The student allegedly made friends and family drive her to hospital appointments, leaving them to wait for up to eight hours for her while she went elsewhere.
She posted images on Facebook showing her wearing bandages and surgical masks and with a shaved head.
She also gave extensive newspaper interviews about her cancer and even posted less than three weeks ago about being in remission.

Her alleged fraud was only exposed after police received an anonymous tip-off saying she could not name a single one of her doctors.

State Police Trooper Thomas Stock contacted the hospitals at which Weaver-Gates said she was treated for her cancer - but there was no mention of her anywhere in their records.
Stock called her efforts to make people believe she had cancer "an elaborate scheme".

Following her arrest, Weaver-Gates was stripped of her Miss Pennsylvania US International title.
"When you deceive the public and take people's money that is under the pretense of fraud, we will not tolerate those actions," said a statement from the pageant organisers Butler's Beauties .
"Ms. Weaver-Gates ... will be required to return her crown and sash upon her release from being detained."

Smart rape victim forced to call boyfriend, calls 911 instead

Police say quick thinking by the victim of a frightening abduction and assault helped them catch her attacker in the act.
The attack happened early Monday in the back of an adult entertainment store.
Officers say Robert Giles, 27, asked the victim to call her boyfriend so he could hear the assault.

Instead of calling her boyfriend, she called 911. Police say the savvy 911 operator also kept his wits about him and played along unbeknownst to the attacker.
“It was quick thinking on his behalf. In fact, (it) might have saved her life,” Clayton County police Maj. Joe Woodall said.
Officers say Giles kidnapped the victim from Hapeville and brought her to the closed Starship Novelties and Gifts store on Tara Boulevard around 4 a.m. Monday intending to rape her. That’s when he allegedly asked her to call her boyfriend so he could listen to the assault.
Rapist Robert Giles
Deonte Smith was the only man working as a Clayton County dispatcher early Monday, when that call came through and he played along.

The victim called 911 and told her attacker it was her boyfriend. The 911 operator, Deonte Smith, played along.
“She explained to him what the perpetrator had told her; that he was wanting him to listen while she was being raped,” Woodall said.
The operator tried to talk the attacker out of the assault and sent police. Police quickly arrived and say they arrested Giles in the act.
“They were able to stop it right then and there and snatched him right from the car,” Woodall said.

Smith told Channel 2 Action News on Tuesday he was just doing his job, but the timing of the call was crucial.
“Honestly I’d say divine intervention,” Smith said. “I was the only guy on the floor that night. The other guy we had had just left not too long before the call came in.”
Smith said the victim deserves credit for her quick thinking while being assaulted.

Giles now faces rape, false imprisonment and obstruction charges. Hapeville police are preparing kidnapping charges against Giles.

Spanish police detain two siblings who kept brother locked in 'inhuman conditions'

Spanish police said Tuesday they had detained two people who kept their 59-year-old brother locked up in "inhuman conditions" in a tiny, roofless room adjoining their home.
The man, who suffers from mental problems, was discovered naked in a tiny room without a roof in the southern town of Dos Hermanas, on a filthy mattress next to which bottles and buckets were laid out for him to go to the toilet, police said in a statement.

Police in the town near Seville made the grisly discovery when they brought his 76-year-old drunk brother back to his home following complaints of disorderly behaviour.
"Once inside the home, they saw a door at the end of a corridor closed with a chain... and padlock," Spain's national police said in a statement.
"After asking the man, he said that was where his brother lived, who had mental problems and whom they kept isolated for his security."
His 61-year-old sister also lived in the house and said she kept him fed and cleaned, and looked after his 1,000-euro ($1,100) monthly pension.
"Due to the strange situation they were faced with, the agents asked both siblings to open the door to check the state of their brother," police said.
"Once they went through, they came across another door closed by a wooden beam."
"After going through both doors, they found a crumbling, narrow staircase that went up to a type of dovecote," they added, before discovering the brother in the tiny roofless hovel.
"His health and cleanliness were deplorable and the state of the place was completely insanitary without access to running water or toilets," police said, describing his living conditions as "inhuman."
The man was taken to hospital, while his two siblings were detained, they added.

Our children are not monsters- argues mom of ISIS fighter

The BBC talked with one young British woman who was recently contacted by ISIS recruiters. She preferred not to use her name, but she did talk about what first got her interested in groups others might view as radical.
It was the news about three teenage girls, gifted students in east London who slipped away in February to join ISIS.

"Why are they going?" she asked herself. "I guess that sparked a sort of curiosity."
She started tweeting stories about the three girls. She thinks that ISIS recruiters found her Snapchat account in her Twitter bio.
"It wasn't really as cliché as people think it was. It wasn't a sort of 'Hey, come join us!'" she notes. "It was more of a, "Hey sister, how are you doin'?' ... It's like a conversation with a friend. It's like a normal thing."
When the recruitment became more intense, she worried most about what joining a radical group would mean for her commitment to soccer.
"If I have three kids and a husband, am I really going to be able to continue living my passion?" she asked herself. "The thing about this [soccer] team is everyone's a family, everyone's together. You have somewhere where you are accepted, where everyone does love you. Once you have a place to go like this this, you won't even be brought to think about that kind of thing."
She now works with The Unity of Faiths Foundation, a group that fights radicalization through soccer.
In Canada, Christianne Boudreau co-founded another kind of group that works to counter extremism. It's called Mothers for Life, and it's a network for parents like her who have lost their sons and daughters to radical groups.
Boudreau's son Damian died fighting with ISIS in Syria last year. She's moving to France, and expects to find a stronger network of parents there looking to counter jihad.
"There are a lot more parents that have come open to one another, working together, supporting each other," she says. "Whereas in North America, very much there's still a stigma, everybody's holding back. They're afraid to speak out, they're afraid to reach out for help."
Boudreau says far too often parents miss the signs of radicalization, in part because popular portrayals of extremists lack nuance.
"They unfortunately look at our children as monsters, and they're not. They're normal, everyday kids that get caught up in something, make mistakes and don't realize the choices they're making," she says. "They're not all evil like what we see in the media. They're kids having emotional struggles."
When parents suspect their children are drifting toward radicalization, they should turn to others in their community for help, according to Boudreau.
"Parents shouldn't try to do this on their own," she says. "They're too emotionally connected to their children. And they can end up pushing their youth further away."
